Custom House and Canniing Town Community Renewal Project

OBJECTIVES / METHODS / POLICIES

Aims and Objectives

Our aims and objectives are as outlined in our articles of association, namely The promotion of charitable purposes for the benefit of local poeple... including:

  1. the relief of poverty;
  2. the advancement of education and training;
  3. the preservation and protection of the environment;
  4. the provision of recreation in the interest of social welfare to improve the conditions of life of local people.

Achieving our objectives

The CHCTCRP has various ways of attempting to achieve these objectives.

  1. Through an enlightened lettings policy whereby we attract tenants to St. Luke's who's business is somehow geared to the serving of the community. St. Luke's houses a doctors surgery, a cafe, a job brokerage business and 10 other charities. In this way St. Luke's has become a warehouse of initiatives.
  2. Through direct provision of training facilities to young people via Pitstop (motorvehicle) and Skillshop (basic construction)
  3. Through the free use of the Father Goose Hall to small groups that target local people and specific categories of need.
  4. Through our continuing community development unit which assists the development and creation of independant organisations geared to serving the local community

Policies and practices

  1. The CH&CTCRP's aims to stay sustainable and therfore always wants to keep central costs down. Central staff are kept to a minimum and this helps keeps the whole organisaiton manageable. We try to run the assets efficiently - for us the only difference between a charity and a private firm is what one does with the surpluses.
  2. Paradoxically, poor areas like Canning Town suffer from the lack of a voluntary sector and so the Charity is always working to help develop other independant groups. We have a proud record in this regard.
  3. The Charities beneficiary policy is geard to local residents only and the main vehicle for this is the offering of the free use of the hall and capacity building support to local groups
  4. The Management Committee has a comprehensive equal opportunities policy, which covers our activities as an employer and as a provider of services.
